I was
creating some of my leftover soup the other night and was reminded of two
literary soup bites: “Soup of the evening, beautiful soup!” and “Soup
is a lot like family. Each ingredient enhances the others; each batch has its
own characteristics; and it needs time to simmer to reach full flavor.” The
first was sung by the Mock Turtle in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
The second quote is by 20th century
English writer, Marge Kennedy. I do love how that Mock Turtle sang, “Beau–ootiful
Soo–oop!” but Kennedy’s quote dishes up how our Senior Center and soup are
alike.
A
successful family, (which Hart Park Senior Center is) or a great soup, (and my
leftover soup is), both start with wonderful stock. A good stock is a slow
mingling of many regular ingredients that creates something delectable and
memorable, something that you can build on. Leftovers are good ingredients to
start with, but the energy, caring and friendships simmering around Hart Park
make a much finer stock. Families and soups can take on spicy personalities,
both savory and sweet. Both sustain. The process of creating soup, or a senior
center, requires commitment, effort, time, enjoyment and maybe tears.
Think
of that the next time soup is on your menu. Then, sing along with the Mock
Turtle and remember what Moliere said, “I live on good soup, not fine
words.”
Happy
heart day! You all have mine!

Tips
for Protecting Your Joints
*
Protecting your joints may help you prevent osteoarthritis and pain associated
with it. Here are some helpful hints:
*
Maintain ideal body weight to help prevent stress on the joints, especially
hips, knees, back and feet.
*
Exercising strengthens the muscles, and strong muscles help keep joints from
rubbing on each other.
* Use
good posture.
* Use
your largest and strongest joints when lifting to help protect from strain.
(Largest are knee joints, but hip joints are used for balance.) Repetitive
stress on the same joints can accelerate the wear and tear, so pace yourself
and rotate your activities.
*
Listen to your body; if you feel pain, do not ignore it.
*
Move around and change positions to decrease stiffness .
*
Start new activities slowly and safely until you know how your body will react
to them.
* No
matter what you do, be prepared and use proper safety equipment like helmets,
knee and elbow pads and proper shoes.
Thank
You
A BIG
thank you goes out to our Advisory Board for the purchase of our new Riverview
Room chairs. They are really nice, comfy, squishy and sturdy! Everyone who uses
the chairs upstairs is very thankful!

Here's

Sing
it out and make the rafters ring.
Clap
your hands together,
Then
sing it so they'll hear it next door.

And

The

While

Gives
you all the tune.
Then
the drum will set the polka beat
as we
begin to croon.
