"Thanks
for the Memories"
by
Judy Kern
As
Bob Hope would say, “thanks for the memories.” About ten years ago, I was
fortunate enough to be with you at the start of the Hart Park Senior Center.
Over the years, we have had our ups and downs, but through it all, it has been
a great ride. You have helped me through the ups and downs of my personal life
and I cannot express the gratitude I feel for the support you have shown me
through it all. Hart Park has become a great success and there are so many
names to remember. I have tried to remember as many as possible, but I will
never forget the faces. You truly are my second family.
Change
is never easy, but I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life. They
say retirement is about having fun and that is what I plan on doing. My plans
include golfing more, traveling more and spending time with my family
(especially my new granddaughter). However, my retirement does not mean I say
goodbye. I plan on attending classes at Hart Park during my retirement years as
well as continuing to volunteer with the meal program. Hart Park is an active
Senior Center where we have fun, and I plan on including it in the fun of my
retirement. God Bless you all and I look forward to seeing you all at a class
or a meal, so don‘t say goodbye.
See
you soon, Judy Kern.

Throughout
2010, these dialogs have been about particular memories or past events Hart
Park Senior Center and Nutrition Site has had since we opened our doors in
January, 2000. Recently we hosted an event that, while based on the past,
reached forward to the future of Hart Park. On August 8, we held an Open House.
We wanted to share with the community all that Hart Park is. We had mini
classes, program demos and displays and, of course, food. And all went very
well, due to the enthusiasm and energy of those who participated. This includes
those who orchestrated the extraordinary publicity, the many volunteers
corralled to help with refreshments, our talented artists, writers, craftsmen
and program participants who shared their passion for Spanish, Mah Jongg,
Scrabble and our fitness classes, the dedicated Advisory board, truly
remarkable fitness instructors, spirited Music from the Hart entertainers and
my super staff. What I found impressive, fascinating and humbling was the
enthusiasm and enjoyment that exuded from our Senior Center. Paul Goodman said,
“Enjoyment is not a goal, it is a feeling that accompanies important ongoing
activity.” Our ongoing activity is important! And it showed. The future of Hart
Park Senior Center is very bright indeed, if the enjoyment seen on August 8 is
any indication. Programs grounded in the past sparkled in the glow of the
future because we enjoy and love what we do. You all have my thanks and sincere
appreciation.

Nutrition Tips: Important Vitamins and Minerals
Seniors
are prone to dehydration for 2 reasons. As we age, the body loses some of it‘s
natural ability to regulate fluids; also, the sense of thirst is dulled.
Dehydration can cause urinary tract infections, constipation, confusion and
muscle cramping. Drink at least 4 glasses of water each day, and ask your
doctor if you can drink Gatorade on hot days and when you‘re very active.
B
vitamins are very important. B12 keeps blood and nerves vital, and can prevent
some dementia. After 50, the stomach produces less gastric acid, making it
difficult to absorb vitamin B12. Look for foods fortified with B12, or ask your
doctor if you should be taking a supplement. The recommended daily amount is
204 mcg.
Vitamin
D is essential for calcium absorption. We get this vitamin through sun exposure
and foods like fatty fish, egg yolk, and fortified milk. Sometimes it may be
necessary to take a vitamin D supplement, but always consult your doctor first.
Beauty
Tips from Audrey Hepburn
For
attractive lips, speak words of kindness…
For
lovely eyes, seek out the good in people…
For a
slim figure, share your food with the hungry…
For
beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day…
For
poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.

Please

trip if you procrastinate! We appreciate your cooperation.
Here
are some of the criteria the travel committee considers when we plan trips:
cost of the venue (will the cost be affordable for most people), distance to
the venue, type of venue (will it appeal to enough people, and is it
handicapped accessible), time of year, other considerations, and cost of bus.
Bus prices are based on distance driven, size of bus, hours needed, and bus
type (handicapped accessible, school bus or coach, etc.).
